Five OHLers to Watch in the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series
Five OHLers to Watch in the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series

The SUBWAY Super Series is one last chance for the Team Canada coaching staff and brass to look at Canadian Hockey League players before they make their picks for the final selection camp before the World Junior Championships next month.

After a pair of games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the SUBWAY Super Series comes to Ontario for games in London on Thursday and Sudbury on Monday. Thursday's game can be seen live at 7:00 pm Eastern on Rogers Sportsnet One, with Monday's game shown live at 7:00 pm on Sportsnet Ontario. Both games are also available live online at www.sportsnet.ca.

Here is a look at five OHL players to watch as key contributors to Team Canada when the tournament opens on Boxing Day in Buffalo, NY.

Calvin de Haan, D, Oshawa Generals
After emerging as one of the OHL's top blueliners two years ago, de Haan earned a job on Canada's team at the World Juniors last season. He played a limited role on that blueline but after helping the Generals get off to a terrific start to the season, the New York Islanders' blue chipper will be counted on to contribute a lot more to Canada's chances this time around.

Erik Gudbranson, D, Kingston Frontenacs
Team Canada will look at having the Frontenacs' hulking blueliner in the lineup as a bonus after the third overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft in June didn't come to terms with the Florida Panthers and came back for a third season in Kingston. He has loads of poise on the ice and was named one of a rotating group of captains as a rookie two seasons ago.

Zack Kassian, RW, Windsor Spitfires
Kassian earned his reputation as a feared power forward early in his career with the Peterborough Petes and was a key contributor to the Spitfires' OHL and Memorial Cup championship runs last spring. The Buffalo Sabres' prospect brings a terrific mix of grit and skill to the lineup and is comfortable playing almost any style of game.

Joey Hishon, C, Owen Sound Attack
When Hishon returned to the Attack lineup after missing three weeks with a hand injury, he quickly made up for lost time scoring 11 goals and 19 points in his first nine games back in the lineup. The Attack were already off to a great start to the season and Hishon's return puts them among the elite teams in the OHL. The Colorado Avalanche prospect was Canada' top scorer at the Under-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament in 2009.

Ryan Ellis, D, Windsor Spitfires
A likely candidate to be Canada's team captain this year, Ellis will make his third appearance on the World Junior squad. He helped Canada win gold in Ottawa in 2009 and a silver last year and will be anxious to lead the team back to the gold medal. Ellis made a name for himself as a powerplay quarterback on the 2009 team and has become one of the most decorated junior players in the history of the OHL.
